How To Help

We help ALL PEOPLE in the Hampton Roads Community

Be part of the JFS Initiative of Caring

Give Generously. We are supported by your donations, and use these funds where the need is greatest.
Volunteer your time. We rely on our wonderful volunteers to fill the gap so that funds can be used for direct services. Your time helps offset our costs.

Jewish Family Service exists today as one link in a chain of mitzvot, performed by thousands of Jews one at a time and organized together, going back to the earliest settlements in Tidewater. Our volunteers truly exemplify the tradition of Chesed—acts of kindness, compassion and mercy toward others.
Each year, our volunteers provide thousands of hours of volunteer service to support our programs. Without their generosity of time and dedication, we would not be able to provide our full spectrum of services!!

Volunteers Needed

Food Pantry

Tuesdays & Thursdays | 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM | Volunteers arrive at 9:40 AM.
Our pantry is a no waste pantry, where neighbors get to shop for the food they want. Help support our community by volunteering today!

Home Delivery Meals Drivers

Thursdays | Meal Pickup: 8:30 AM – 9:00 AM
Help deliver food to the home-bound and elderly! Feel proud knowing that because of your help, your neighbors are not without food!

Personal Affairs Management department

Filing help and Check Writers needed
We serve over 1200 people at any given time with managing their personal affairs—and we need your help to do it! We are in need of assistance to help with clerical tasks!!

Friendly visitors are always needed

Mental health and wellness are directly correlated to socialization! Many of the people that we support are socially isolated— You can help by becoming a “friendly visitor”! These acts of Bikkur Holim (visiting and caring for those who are ill) mean all the difference in the world to someone who is alone!

Do You Knit or Crochet?

Tuesdays | 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Join a wonderful group of volunteers every Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the Survivors Room at the JCC as they knit and crochet handmade items for indigent JFS clients which are given out during the winter holiday season. For some recipients, these thoughtful gifts may be the only holiday gift they receive.

Can’t join the group? Donations of new, unworn handmade items or medium-weight yarn are always appreciated. For more information or to donate, please contact the JFS Volunteer Coordinator.
