Jewish hunger in Hampton Roads is real – so is our answer. In 2014, the Milk & Honey Food Assistance program kept food on the tables of 65 local Jewish households. This program subsidizes local Jewish households who are in chronic need of financial assistance. Clients include those with special needs and families who often have to choose between purchasing medication, paying bills, and buying food.
The Milk & Honey program allows clients the opportunity to shop in the Milk & Honey Food Room during set distribution dates and in times of immediate need. Milk & Honey is able to provide some kosher items and items that fit special nutritional needs. The program also provides clients with gift cards to grocery stores and gas stations, as appropriate. JFS case managers can link clients to available local resources such as free or low cost items/activities/services, prescription discounts, and other useful information.
The Milk & Honey Food Assistance program orders food from the Southeastern Virginia Foodbank and receives food from many generous donors throughout our community.
If your family or organization is interested in a food drive or wants to bring in non-perishable or perishable foods or other household supplies, please contact the JFS Special Needs Case Manager at 757-459-460 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Suggested foods we always need: canned tuna, vegetables and fruit; peanut butter; cereals; pasta; toiletries; and cleaning supplies.
