Food & Financial Assistance

Jewish Family Service provides food and financial assistance to local families in need. In these tough economic times, a visit to JFS can help a family keep food on the table, pay an outstanding bill, and make a child’s holiday wishes come true.

To assist local Jewish families, JFS offers:
Milk & Honey Food Assistance Program
Financial Assistance Services
Meals on Wheels
Chanukah Gift Program

For the general public, Jewish Family Service, in conjunction with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia runs a Food Closet. Located at the Grayson Road office, the food closet is open Monday, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The food closet provides emergency groceries for individuals and families who might otherwise go hungry. Clients can receive donations once a month only.

Milk & Honey Food Assistance Program

Jewish hunger in Hampton Roads is real – so is our answer. In 2009, JFS Milk & Honey Food Assistance Program (Milk & Honey) kept food on the tables in 48 local Jewish households (up from about 38 households in 2008). Milk & Honey subsidizes local Jewish households who are in chronic need of financial assistance. Clients include those with special needs, homebound clients, and families who often have to choose between purchasing medication, paying bills, and buying food.

Milk & Honey allows clients the opportunity to shop in the “Room of Milk & Honey” during set distribution dates and in times of immediate need. Milk & Honey strives to provide kosher items and items that fit special nutritional needs. The program also provides clients with grocery store and gas gift cards, as appropriate. For homebound clients, food delivery is available. JFS also makes clients aware of local resources such as free items/activities/services, prescription discounts, and other useful information.

The Milk & Honey Food Assistance Program is supported by the Southeastern Virginia Foodbank and with food kindly donated by the community. Through the JFS “Bee” a FRIEND of the Milk & Honey program, organizations help provide JFS with edible food and other items for Jewish families in need.

Financial Assistance Services

In addition to Milk & Honey, JFS reaches out to local Jewish households struggling with finances and facing unplanned financial emergencies. Although the range of services is wide, the agency continuously depends on the generosity of community to donate funds, goods and professional services to accommodate the evergrowing need of Hampton Roads residents.

JFS Financial Assistance Services can provide:
• payment of emergency or overdue daily living expenses such as utility bills
• rent and medical bills
• assistance applying for community services
• supportive counseling services
• transportation to community resources and medical appointments
• gifts for children for Chanukah
• Jewish holiday/ritual items; subsidized burial expense
• cash or food gifts for Rosh Hashanah
• Passover and Chanukah
• subsidized child care expense
• subsidized summer camp fees
• donated items such as clothing and household items
• volunteer hours

All donations to JFS are tax deductible!

Meals on Wheels

JFS has the only Kosher Meals on Wheels program around!

The Meals on Wheels program is available to adults who are over the age of 60, have a disability, are unable to grocery shop and/or unable to prepare meals for themselves. This program is available for residents in the Norfolk and Virginia Beach areas, regardless of race, religion or background. All qualified adults are eligible to receive up to seven, or as few as two, nutritious kosher meals every week (meals are delivered every Thursday) from a JFS Volunteer, who also visits with each client. Each well balanced meal costs $4.25 and can be adjusted on a sliding scale.

Chanukah Gift Program

Each year Jewish Family Service (JFS) reaches out at Chanukah time to bring joy to children and teens of local families who are struggling financially.* JFS only can do this thanks to the kindness and generosity of community donors. During the months of October and November, JFS collects new items, both fun and functional (clothing, household goods, etc), to fulfill the “wish lists” of local Jewish children. JFS assists families with children, ages 0- 17 years, with a wide variety of interests and needs. Additionally, JFS accepts monetary or gift card donations to assist in purchasing gifts.

Your contribution’s impact does not end with the holidays. Often, clients use the gifts received at Chanukah time as gifts throughout the next year.

Help us bring happiness to our local vulnerable population during the upcoming holiday season by making a contribution to the Chanukah Gift Program.
